Realizing His Value(s)
Larry Absheer understands money. After all, he has an economics degree from Wheaton College and an MBA from Washington University. He also has more than 40 years of financial management experience, first at Deloitte and then at the Missouri Athletic Club, where he served as CFO and now directs their planned giving program.
But he didn't understand the power of planned giving until he participated in the Zoo's program with Thompson & Associates. "The process opened my eyes to the possibilities for my legacy, how much I really have to share and what I could do that would be meaningful," Larry recalls.
After his wife passed, Larry had named his alma mater as the main beneficiary of his estate, but now he is enjoying making choices based on his values and including other organizations that matter to him, such as the Saint Louis Zoo. One of his hobbies is ichthyology, the branch of zoology devoted to the study of fish.
A few years ago, a friend also encouraged Larry to join the Marlin Perkins Society, the Zoo's highest level of membership. "Everyone I have met at the Zoo has been professional and welcoming. They treat me like family, and I plan to support them for the rest of my life and beyond," Larry says. "After all, as they say, you can't take it with you."
